UN: Pope Francis calls for “collective response” to climate change challenge

Pope Francis

The climate change has been described as “challenge of civilization” by Pope Francis, who expresses his regret at the “very weak” commitments the countries have made since the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015.

“With the Paris Agreement of 12 December 2015, the international community became aware of the urgency and need for a collective response to help build our common home,” the Pontiff recalled in a video message to participants at the United Nations Climate Action Summit, in New York. “However, four years after that historic Agreement, we can see that the commitments made by States are still very ‘weak’, and are far from achieving the objectives set,” he added.

Pope Francis noted that climate change will force people to rethink about the meaning of our models of consumption and production. “We are facing a ‘challenge of civilization'(…) and it is clear that we have a multiplicity of solutions that are within everyone’s reach, if we adopt on a personal and social level a lifestyle that embodies honesty, courage and responsibility,” he added.
